Todd Debreceni is an award-winning Makeup Effects Artist and a very smart man. Not only is he following the Dick Smith School of open wisdom, thereby paying it forward, but he's also embraced the fact that our craft is constantly evolving and that only by sharing that knowledge do we all get the benefit. Wisdom from the best.
– Bill Corso, Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning Makeup Artist
The absolute treasure trove of knowledge contained within Todd's multiple editions of Special Makeup Effects for Stage and Screen is invaluable for both novices and professionals alike. The latest edition ups the ante, proving it a necessity to anyone interested in the special makeup arts.
– Joel Harlow, Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning Makeup Artist
Right now, I think if you ask any of the older, successful and well known spfx makeup artists what helped and inspired them early on, they’d say, ‘Richard Corson and Dick Smith’s Monster Makeup Handbook’. But I think if you could somehow go into the future 20-30 years or more and ask the same question of spfx artists in that day, they’d say, ‘the Debreceni books.’ Heck, everybody’s saying that now...
- Bob Brown, makeup effects artist and designer
In an age of information overload, Todd distills the art and science of special effects makeup, providing insights into the reasons behind specific techniques.
- Kazu Hiro, Oscar & BAFTA-winning makeup artist
Books about makeup artistry for motion pictures and television written by industry insiders are rare. Todd's are a treasure. They belong in every serious artist's library.
– Michael Key, Emmy Award-winning Makeup Artist; Publisher of Makeup Artist Magazine; Executive producer of IMATS
With so many new techniques and materials developing these days in the makeup FX world, this is one book I find myself referring to regularly.
- Steve Wang, creature designer
Todd has worked as a professional makeup artist and as a professional teacher, and it really shows in this book's detailed, clear, concise and no-nonsense approach to the art and craft of special makeup effects. I'm now insanely jealous of all the people who will learn from this book because this is the book I would have killed to have had when I was starting out....... IT'S NOT FAIR!!!
– Neill Gorton, BAFTA-winning artist, and owner of Millennium FX & Gorton Studios; Publisher of Prosthetics magazine
I purchased Todd's excellent book, "Special Makeup Effects for Stage and Screen: Making and Applying Prosthetics" in 2009, and immediately it became clear that this was not 'just another makeup book'. No other book available at the time of writing this review covers as many of the latest materials and up-to-date techniques, nor in as much detail.
Todd writes in a friendly and conversational manner and explains complex techniques easily, interspersed with dry humour. Todd has great connections- included in his comprehensive tome are pictures and interviews with several of the top working makeup artists of the last decade, who have generously shared their knowledge to help the rest of us improve our skills and techniques.
- Naomi D Lynch, Special FX Makeup Artist at "The Makeup FX Workshop"
Todd's book is always the first thing I recommend to people that want to learn special effects. From the hobbyist to beginner, to expert, there is always great information and new things to learn on every page!
- Frank Ippolito, Makeup effects artist; owner of Thingergy, Inc.
Todd was the mastermind behind the F/X work on the film The Enemy God. By far Todd is the best F/X person I have ever worked with. Todd is a total professional. It was an honor to work alongside him.
